Rock Band 101 is a program designed to help students step out of their shell by immersing them in the world of Rock and Roll. Through group performances and collaborative learning, students build meaningful connections with their peers while exploring their creative potential. The hands-on experience of playing in a band fosters confidence in a tangible way, helping students develop both their musical and social skills.
Whether they're strumming, drumming, or singing, Rock Band 101 gives students the chance to express themselves, take risks, and be their weird, awesome selves in a supportive, energetic environment.
These students were given surveys in weeks 1, 2, 7, and 8 with questions like “Rate your confidence on a scale of 1-10,” “How would you describe yourself?,” and “Do you feel like you’ve become more comfortable being yourself because of Rock Band 101? Why?”
Throughout the program, our survey results showed 45% of the students had a “Confidence Score Increase” of at least 2 points or higher when asked to rate their confidence on a scale of 1-10. The biggest increase was of 4 points, which doubled that student’s original score.
When asked “do you feel more comfortable being yourself because of Rock Band 101?,” 7 out of our 11 students answered yes. Every student wrote they would definitely participate in Rock Band 101 again.
Our favorite piece of data we collected was the type of words students used to describe themselves at the beginning vs. at the end of the program. In the first survey, students used words like “Fun, Cool, and Nice,” one student even put Eh, so-so.” At the end of the program, when asked the same question, students used words like “Brave, Adventurous, Creative, Silly, Outgoing, Smart, and Confident.”

The BeatLab is one of our flagship in-house programs made possible at no cost to students through the United Way’s United Neighborhoods grant program. Thanks to the waived registration fees, we’ve been able to serve 30 students since September 2024.
Through the program, each student is guided by a professional in Recording Arts and Sound Engineering, using a provided iPad equipped with GarageBand software. This empowers them to create original compositions, regardless of prior music experience. Our goal with this program is to reach at-risk individuals and provide them with a positive outlet for self-expression through music, helping to keep them engaged and out of trouble.

The impact of The BeatLab extends far beyond just the students who participate. By offering a safe and constructive space for creative expression, the program strengthens the community as a whole. As students develop their skills, they gain confidence, build a sense of ownership over their work, and learn valuable lessons in collaboration, persistence, and discipline. These are qualities that radiate out into their neighborhoods, fostering positive social connections and reducing the likelihood of involvement in risky behaviors.
The BeatLab gives young people a way to connect with their peers and mentors, creating a network of support that helps break cycles of isolation and disconnection. The program also serves as a bridge for students who might not otherwise have access to
technology or music education, leveling the
playing field and opening doors to new opportunities.

Ultimately, The BeatLab is more than just a
music program—it's a catalyst for personal growth,
community cohesion, and empowerment, helping to
create a brighter future for everyone involved.
