Family Irish Arts Camp​

 

Welcome to this summer’s Family Irish Arts Camp! â€‹

 

This year’s camp features four levels of classes for ages 6-15 with a final Irish Ceílí where everyone (family and friends included) can participate! This year, students will have the opportunity to work alongside special guests Sean Hoffman and Ellen Coplen of Bobcat Opossum and Shannon McTigue of Spraoi agus Rince.

Introduction to Irish Music:

An introduction to Irish music, song, storytelling, and dance with joHn Kennedy, Nancy Turner, Gwen Butler, and Shannon McTigue. Students will explore Irish Whistle, Bodhran, Singing in Irish, Irish Dancing, and Storytelling.

​

Intermediate Irish Fiddle with Sean Hoffman:

Intermediate young musicians (ages 6+) who already play violin are invited to join Irish Fiddle with Sean Hoffman where they will hone their performance skills and explore traditional repertoire. This class is designed for students with a solid foundation in first position. No prior experience with Irish music is required.

Ensemble Irish Music with Ellen Coplen:

Intermediate students who are ready to move on to ensemble playing will work with Ellen Coplen to develop their collaborative musicianship. This will be available to all instruments (Whistle, Flute, Fiddle, Tenor Banjo, Guitar, Concertina, Piano).

Students will be placed in the appropriate groups on the first day of camp.

All ages Irish Ceili Dancing with Shannon McTigue will also be offered. Parents and students of all ages and skill levels may participate at no cost and with no registration required. Just show up and dance!

Meet joHn Kennedy

joHn Kennedy

Program Director/Instructor

joHn teaches a variety of instruments, including beginning through intermediate Irish whistle, flute, and bodhran, beginner through advanced Irish guitar, beginning Irish fiddle, and sean-nós Irish singing. 

The leader of Kennedy’s Kitchen, joHn is an award-winning singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist, sound engineer, producer, and promoter.

joHn is the 2004 All-Ireland Fleadh Silver Medalist in Accompaniment, competing on guitar. He has won numerous Gold and Silver medals in traditional singing and accompaniment at Midwest Fleadhs.
